Two sworn in at Vernon Council meeting Monday night ………

Council votes to certify election results.  Tina Sloan took Mayor’s seat, while Joey Brock took Councilman’s seat.

Joey Brock and Tina Sloan received their oaths of office before taking their respective seats on the Vernon City Council.

 

Brock and Sloan joined council members Gary Owens and Gwen March in representing Vernon residents on the council,  while Narvel Armstrong vacated her seat following the swearing-in.

 

Both Sloan and Brock took time to thank the Vernon voters for the great turn out at the polls and for their respective elections.

 

Dealing with agenda items Monday night council members took the following actions:

 

  •  Held a public hearing on the first reading of  Ordinance 17-209.   AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF VERNON, FLORIDA, IMPLEMENTING ITS ADMINISTRATION OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS IN CONNECTION WITH THE CITY’S YOUTH RECREATION AND ATHLETIC PROGRAM, ESTABLISHING GROUNDS FOR DISQUALIFICATION OF ADULT VOLUNTEERS IN SAID PROGRAM, PROVIDING FOR APPEALS OF SUCH DISQUALIFICATION, AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

 

  •  Held a public hearing on the first reading of Ordinance 17-210.  ORDINANCE LIMITING TRAFFIC ON CHURCH AND POMPEY STREETS TO RESIDENTIAL TRAFFIC, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SERVICE VEHICLES, PROVIDING FOR ONE-TIME PERMITTING FOR CERTAIN HEAVY VEHICLES WITH THREE AXLES OR MORE RENDERING SERVICE TO SAID RESIDENTIAL AREAS, AND PROVIDING FOR THE ERECTION OF SIGNS TO NOTIFY THE PUBLIC, PROVIDING FOR ENFORCEMENT AND PENALTIES FOR VIOLATION OF SAID ORDINANCE, REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH, AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

 

  • Held a public hearing on the first reading of Ordinance 17-211.  ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING DISCONTINUANCE OF SERVICE FOR NONPAYMENT OF BILLS IN CONNECTION WITH THE SAME OR A DIFFERENT TYPE OR A DIFFERENT CLASS OF WATER AND/OR SEWER SERVICE FURNISHED TO THE SAME CUSTOMER AT THE SAME PREMISES; PROVIDING THAT SUCH REMEDY SHALL BE SUPPLEMENTAL TO ALL OTHER LAWFUL METHODS OF ENFORCEMENT OF PAYMENT OF DELINQUENCIES; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES OR PARTS THEREOF IN CONFLICT HEREWITH; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

 

  • Held a public hearing on the first reading of Ordinance 17-212.  AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF VERNON, FLORIDA, REGULATING THE HOURS OF BUSINESS OF ANY LICENSEE UNDER THE STATE BEVERAGE LAW WITHIN THE CORPORATE LIMITS OF THE CITY OF VERNON, PROVIDING FOR PENALTIES FOR VIOLATIONS OF SUCH ORDINANCE, REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH, AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.  This ordinance will be “fine-tuned” and brought back before the council.

 

  • Appointed Gary Owens as President of the City Council.
  •  Appointed Gwen March as Vice President of the City Council.
  •  Approved demolition of the concession stands behind City Hall.
  •   Approved the Vernon Garden Club placing swings on the City Square.
  •   Voted to not allow CDBG to administer and provide engineering services for a FRDAP grant.
  •   Approved a new site access agreement for the City Square.
  •   Approved setting the Miss Fire Cracker Pageant for June 17th.
  •   Approved a six month extension for  CDBG grant for a sewer and water project.
