KMS SECOND GRADERS MAKE TERRARIUMS ……..

Thursday, November 10th some of Kate Smith Elementary’s students were up to their elbows in terrariums. Building terrariums has been one Chipley Garden Club’s annual youth projects for over twenty years; however this was the first time at the new KMS Elementary School.

Youth Chair Linda Pigott reported this year club members assisted 124 second graders with construction of their own terrariums. Students were supplied with drink bottles recycled into terrarium containers, tools, soil, gravel, charcoal, an assortment of plants, spray bottles, and even some plastic bugs. As the children worked, club members explained how a terrarium works and why they are constructed the way they are.

Terrarium Building is just one of Chipley Garden Club’s youth projects. Live plants were delivered to 1st and 3rd graders earlier this year. Club members will return to the school during the winter to assist students as they create live and dried floral designs. The plants, terrariums and floral designs will be entered in the 2017 Washington County’s 4-H Youth Fair.

Chipley Garden Club has many more community-based projects. If you’re interested in learning more, please contact Club President Debbie Mitchell at 638-0536.
